The railway network in Japan is highly developed. It is connected by rail from Wakkanai city which is the northernmost tip of Japan to Ibusuki city in the southern part of Kyushu. In urban areas railroad runs like a mesh, the total length of railway in Japan reaches 17000 miles. Shinkansen is the backbone of the Japanese railway network.
Opened at the same time as the Tokyo Olympic Games
The bullet train was constructed in accordance with the Tokyo Olympic Games. The Tokyo Olympic Games is a symbolic event for Japan to return to the international community, and the Shinkansen was also regarded as a national project in the same sense. At the time of opening, it operated 4 hours from Tokyo Station and Shin Osaka Station (about 370 miles). Currently the route connecting Tokyo and Shin Osaka is the section with the most passengers, and the required time has been shortened to about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Most of the major cities in Japan are bound by Shinkansen. Limited express trains are running from big cities to small cities, and by connecting the Shinkansen and express trains you can go to most major cities. But the network of the Shinkansen has not been completed yet. The Hokuriku region, Hokkaido and Kyushu are planning the construction of Shinkansen.
Tokaido Shinkansen is a congestion schedule
The movie below is a movie taken at near Tokyo Station (Hamamatsucho Station). A lot of Shinkansen passes through for about 20 minutes. In the morning and evening, the number further increases, and the Tokaido Shinkansen runs every 5 minutes. In the structure of the current station it is not possible to further shorten the 5 minute interval.
Although it is Shinkansen that is operated on this overcrowded schedule, it is scarcely delayed from schedule. If the arrival of the bullet train is delayed by 1 minute, the conductor apologizes to the passengers. Passengers who are short-tempered will be furious if delayed by 30 minutes, and there will be a refund of express charges if delayed by two hours.
Except for the effects of heavy snow and typhoons, the bullet train rarely delays by more than 10 minutes. It is said that the Shinkansen is a very accurate vehicle in time, and this accuracy is said to represent the character of the Japanese.
